I’m very fortunate to spend a week every summer in Scotland at the absolutely stunning Gleneagles Hotel. I’d love to be there at Xmas and New Year to experience a lovely Scottish Hogmanay celebration.

However, the time I spend there in the summer has inspired me to come up with some ideas on how to create a Scottish inspired tartan theme for decorating the home at Xmas.

What I love about tartan is the fabulous range of colour tones available which means you can pretty much incorporate any colours into your home Xmas decorations.

Use tartan as inspiration for your Christmas decorations this year, letting the tartan you choose dictate the colour palette for the overall decor while keeping everything else neutral, but oozing with style.

On Christmas Day I like to focus on the overall look to create the correct ambience for my dinner guests, starting with the dining table, which I layer with tartan table linen and top off with crisp white overlays.

I denote each place setting with a linen napkin, adding a rustic tag and a thistle stem to make a great focal point.

I mix vintage sparkling glasses with elegant new china for an “out with the old in with the new” style.

I like to use candles and votives for the dinner table lighting to give the table a hint of glamour and style. Tip: try battery candles and tea lights for ease of use and safety.

I prefer to use cut flowers for centrepieces although you can use any plants or decorative vegetables that fit in with your chosen tartan colour palette. Don’t forget to add a thistle or two!

I love to dress my dining chairs at Xmas with white chair covers and matching tartan sashes, but no bows, just simply tied.

You have to make sure that you keep the textures and colours of the decor toned and balanced throughout your home for a timeless look.

Tartan ribbon can be added to cushions, topiary trees, sweet stations, the Christmas cake, crackers and much more to keep a splash of tartan throughout.

Here are 4 simple ideas on how you can add tartan to your Xmas decor:

Hang handmade tartan sweetie cones from the fireplace alongside the traditional stockings.

Tartan hearts make a quirky alternative to the usual Xmas decorations. Hang small ones on the Xmas tree or attach some mistletoe and hang in a prominent place for your Xmas kiss!

Scented tartan bags can add a bit of Xmas aroma to your reception rooms and even your toilets and bathrooms.

Add red tartan bows liberally throughout your house, especially on the Xmas tree.
