At this time of year I like to create my own Christmas decorations to bring some seasonal cheer to my family home using items that are freely available in the countryside.

I particularly love to go on long winter walks and forage for anything that I think will make up into a Christmas decoration.

In this example I will show you how to make a stylish and interesting Christmas decoration to adorn a table or sideboard using pine cones, twisted hazel and dried grasses, which are all in abundance in the countryside.

These DIY Christmas decorations are easy to make.

You will need:

1 twig with several pine cones attached

1  single twig of interesting shape e.g. twisted hazel

1 slim vase

1 spray of dried grass

5cm wide golden ribbon

1 small bag of white snow

1 can of gold spray paint

1 container of gold glitter

glue

Important: Always use your spray in a well ventilated room and use a paper mask to cover your nose and mouth.

Cover the table with newspaper or a plastic sheet before you start.

Layout your twigs and spray them and glitter them immediately. Leave to dry then turn over to do the same for the other side.

Get everything together ready to assemble. Start by putting your snow in the bottom of your vase.

Take your ribbon and glue it on to the bottom of the vase. Then arrange your twigs and grasses ensuring the ends are submerged in the snow, and top up with snow to show more twig above the vase. Once you are happy with the shape of your Christmas arrangement it is ready for displaying anywhere in your home. If gold is not your colour, choose a colour to match in with your Christmas colour scheme.

There is still plenty of time to create a DIY decoration for a New Year’s Eve party. So, get foraging, it is a great excuse to go for a long country walk and burn off some of that Christmas turkey and pud!

Merry Xmas
