Romantic destinations Taormina in Sicily

On a recent holiday I visited Taormina, one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen on Sicily’s Eastern coast.

Taormina is a stone’s throw away from the port of Messina in the north and also reachable from Catania in the south. Taormina is a beautiful small town perched on the side of Mount Tauro; the town offers intoxicating views of the surrounding coastline and of the volcano Mount Etna.  Taormina has many remnants from Greek and Roman past, one of these is the magnificent Greco-Roman amphitheatre which dates back to the 3rd century BC. The theatre was built originally by the Greeks and then renovated by the Romans. It neatly nestles into the hillside and has excellent acoustics and is still in used today for fabulous summer performances. From the Theatre you get the most spectacular views of the sea and Mount Etna.

The town itself is picturesque with its clock tower gate, little squares, delightful quaint streets adorned with old buildings used for beautiful boutiques, cafes, shops, romantic candlelit restaurants, and secluded bars. A beautiful baroque fountain can be found in one of the squares and the best pizza and icreams can be found. Another fabulous spot is the public gardens, Via Bagnoli Croce, full of flowers and exotic plants.

It has access to the popular beaches and coves via an aerial tramway, bus or footpath which wind down between the town and coast, The Ionian Sea is remarkably warm, perfect for swimming and the sea is extremely buoyant due to a high salt content.

If you are looking for a romantic honeymoon or holiday destination then Taormina is the place.
